Sourcing Brass Components from India: Five Questions Every Importer Should Ask

India is a major source of brass fittings, fasteners and precision components, but suppliers vary widely in capability and reliability. Before you commit to an order, put these five questions to any prospective supplier.

1. Can you build to my drawing and standard?

A capable supplier will review your drawing in detail, raise questions about tolerances and threads, and confirm the grade and standard. Be cautious of a quick "yes" with no questions.

2. How do you control quality?

Ask what is checked at each stage, which instruments are used and how records are kept. Request an example inspection report and material certificate. See our own quality checkpoints for what good looks like.

3. What documents come with every shipment?

You should expect a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading as standard, plus quality or compliance documents when you request them. Ask to see draft documents before shipment.

4. How do you communicate?

Response speed, clarity and honesty about lead times during quotation are the best predictors of how problems will be handled later. A single, accountable contact is a good sign.

5. What are the commercial terms?

Understand the Incoterm, payment method, lead time and what happens if the goods do not conform. Our Incoterms guide explains the terms we quote.

Start small, verify, then scale

A sample or trial order is the most reliable way to judge a supplier. Approve the sample in writing, inspect the first shipment carefully and, if possible, arrange a third-party inspection or visit.
